Smash hits? The CFL top Fifty for 2018 is out.

Smash hits? The CFL top Fifty for 2018 is out.

Each year TSN ( https://www.tsn.ca/reilly-reclaims-top-spot-in-cfl-on-tsn-top-50-players-1.1109941 ) unveils a list of the ‘Top 50’ players currently active in the CFL. As with any list of this nature it is highly subjective and immediately scrutinised and open to debate.

Least surprising of all, and perhaps the decision that will be least debated is finding Edmonton QB Mike Reilly at the top of the pile. Reilly is the current CFL Most Outstanding Player. The Esks QB  has a strong case for being ranked top of the list having finished the 2017 season having played in all 18 games and completed 447 of 654 passes (68.3 %) for 5830 yards and 30 touchdowns. Meaning he was first in the league for yards passing, tied for 1st with 30 touchdowns thrown & 1st in the league for most rushing touchdowns at 12.

Winnipeg had the most players on the list with 10 players listed. The highest ranked of the Blue Bombers is Andrew Harris, RB in 3rd place who made a run at being the first player to have a 1000/1000 season (rushing and receiving yards) in a CFL season last year.

At the other end of the scale Montreal has only one player listed in the top 50. Free Agent acquisition DB Tommie Campbell.

Players are listed by their current teams rather than who they may have been playing for in 2017. Hence players like Campbell or Charleston Hughes who are listed with Montreal and Saskatchewan respectively have made their reputations playing elsewhere. This is meant to be an annual ‘as it stands’ list so they are still viewed as being ranked this way going into the season.

The great thing about a list like this is that it does open up debate. Perhaps Ottawa fans feel their QB, Trevor Harris who tied for first with 30 TD’s in 2017 isn’t getting the respect he deserves? Perhaps some will wonder if rookie of the year James Wilder Jr is placed too high based on his small body of work? Perhaps some will wonder if their favourites have been hard done by? Whatever people think it is always good to get people talking about the game.
