BAFA’s National League weekend highlights

BAFA’s National League weekend highlights

With the Great Britain Lions in Finland for the IFAF European Championships where they lost 28-7 to the host country, the attention on BAFA’s National League moved to some very important games that could decide conference titles and playoff seedings.

In the division one conferences, the focus fell on the only game being played in the SFC 1 East where the Kent Exiles travelled to the London Hornets. The Exiles stayed top of the conference at (7-2) with a 17-0 victory while the quirk of the schedule sees them host the (6-3) Hornets in the final regular season game in two weeks.

The same day will see the (6-3) Cambridgeshire Cats host the (4-5) Colchester Gladiators to decide who joins the Exiles in the playoffs.

The Yorkshire Rams shut out the Glasgow Tigers 53-0 in the NFC 1 North to go (5-3) and give them a chance to make the playoffs with next week’s game at the (6-1-1) Lancashire Wolverines looking massive while the (7-0) Northumberland Vikings host the (3-6) Tigers.

The battle in the SFC 2 South saw the Hertfordshire Cheetahs take the lead against the Portsmouth Dreadnoughts on their first possession with a huge touchdown run from Adam Adeniji. Defenses dominated the rest of the half and in the third quarter the Cheetahs increased their lead with an 80-yard touchdown reception from Tom McQuillin.

The Dreadnoughts had goal to go in the fourth quarter to close the gap, but the Cheetahs’ defense held. After the Dreadnoughts missed their second field goal attempt, the Cheetahs completed the scoring with another touchdown run from Adeniji and with a successful two-point after took the 20-0 win. The head to head points differential during the regular season gave the conference title to the Cheetahs.

The SFC 2 East Essex battle between the Norwich Devils and the Ipswich Cardinals saw the Cardinals take a 14-point lead before the Devils tied the game at 14-14. With both teams battling for a playoff spot it was the final period that saw the Cardinals take the 21-14 win to post the same (5-2) record as their rivals while the Maidstone Pumas edged the East Essex Sabres 12-10 for their first win of the season.

Next week will see the (6-0) conference leading London Blitz B travel to play the Devils while the Cardinals host the (3-3) Essex Spartans.

SFC 2 East

London Blitz B   6  0 0 244 30
Norwich Devils   5  2 0 177 124
Ipswich Cardinals   5  2 0 183 161
Essex Spartans   3  3 0 142 110
East Essex Sabres   1  7 0 195 242
Maidstone Pumas   1  7 0 39 313

The Torbay Trojans overcame the Somerset Wyverns 16-7 in the SFC 2 West to go (6-2) and help their playoffs seeding.

In the NFC 2 South, the top of the table clash saw the Staffordshire Surge score early at the Birmingham Bulls who had taken a 15-11 win three weeks ago. The game finished with a 14-8 win for the Surge that saw both teams finish the regular season on (7-1) and by my calculations, the Surge as conference champions by two points.

The Halton Spartans confirmed their playoff spot with a 26-0 win at the Furness Phantoms in the NFC 2 Central.
