Winnipeg fans will be thrilled with the news. Bighill is an understandably popular player. Bighill is a 5 time CFL all star and 2 time CFL Most Outstanding Defensive Player. Any CFL team would be happy to have him on board.
Not to mention we have seen a recent news cycle of top CFL players trying out for and signing in the NFL. So it is good to see one of the undoubted starts of the CFL commit his future to the league.
After trying to make the NFL, the former BC Lion returned last year. He gave his reasons for choosing Winnipeg at the time.
Bighill only joined the Bombers in May, following his release from the New Orleans Saints and just in time for training camp. It is clear that both sides are happy with the fit.
There is a lot of uncertainty around player contracts at the moment. We are at the expiry point of the current collective-bargaining agreement. Because of this some may want to wait until a new deal is done. Not Bighill, he is obviously happy where he is and with what is on the table.
It cannot hurt as Winnipeg Sport freelancer Judy Owen notes that Bighill will also be developing his post game career. Bighill also has a job at Wellington-Altus a local financial company with ties to the area.
Bighill has been working towards becoming a financial adviser so this will definitely have added into his thinking. Most of all though he feels at home in Winnipeg. An important consideration in the itinerant life of anyone involved with pro football.
So congratulations Bombers you got your man. Congratulations too to the CFL and the fans. We get to see a genuine star name for a few more years. Really looking forward to seeing how this plays out.
