‘Johnny B Gone’: Manziel out of the CFL

Johnny Manziel is out of the CFL. The league has instructed the Montreal Alouttes to release him.

The CFL stated it was prepared to approve a contract for Manziel for the 2018 season if he continued to meet a number of conditions set by the league.

Because he has contravened the agreement which made him eligible to play in the league his tenure is at an end. Further the league will not sanction a contract with any of the other clubs.

Johnny football has been an ongoing saga for the league. The Alouettes traded for Manziel in a bumper deal 6 weeks into the 2018 season.

This followed speculation about him heading north to his initial signing with Hamilton.

Manziel’s absence – what difference will it make?

Let’s put this into perspective. Manziel has played one season in the CFL’s storied history.

He had the starting job in Montreal. However, their best run came with Antonio Pipkin at the helm.

During his time he was one of the least accurate passers in the league and only showed flashes of potential.

The real off-season QB story

For me there is a greater and better quarterback story for the league going into 2019.

Many people expected two time and reigning MOP and Grey Cup MVP Bo Levi Mithcell to head to the NFL. Instead Mitchell is returning to the Calgary Stampeders.

The fastest man to 60 wins in league history. The man with the CFL record for most consecutive wins by a starting quarterback (14). The quarterback with the record for best starting record for a first-time quarterback (12 Wins, 1 Loss).

Not to mention, the quarterback with the best winning percentage and an incredible 69-15-2 record in the league.

Manziel might generate headlines. He might get viewing up south of the border. But I know which one is a bigger star in this league.

The Manziel experiment is over. However the league got Bo back. A huge star returning to duel with the likes of Mike Reilly for the passing title.

If you had told me one could go and one could stay at the end of the season this is the way I’d have picked it for the league.
