Tennessee Titans – Five Free Agency Targets

Tennessee Titans – Five Free Agency Targets
Reading Time: 3 minutes.

The Tennessee Titans come into this free agency off the back of a strange 2018. After spending on some marquee players last year they could not take the big steps they were hoping. The good news is that they still have enough cap space ($42 million) to be able to add some more key pieces when free agency kicks off this week.

The biggest issue they will encounter is that they have similar needs to the Texans and Colts, both of whom have more cap space and can bully the market somewhat. However, there still should be some interesting pieces available for the Titans in this free agency period.

1) Preston Smith (Edge rusher)

The Titans run a 3-4 scheme and require an edge guy who can replace Derrick Morgan. Smith is not the most highly thought of edge rusher available but he may be one of the best. Smith is both solid against the run and able to get after the quarterback. That is a combination that the Titans definitely need and Smith could fill the Morgan sized hole quite nicely.

Za’Darius Smith comes into free agency the bigger name but Smith could be the cheaper and better producing option for the long term. Both are the sort of player the Titans need.

2) Adam Humphries (Wide Receiver)

This could easily have been Golden Tate but I can see the Titans being outbid by the Colts for Tate. Humphries is still going to command a decent amount but he should be cheaper than Tate when all is said and done. The Titans need to go and find a reliable pass catcher for Marcus Mariota. 2019 is the crunch year for deciding their future and the only way to know for sure is to make sure Mariota has the weapons to help him succeed. Humphries would also draw some attention away from Corey Davis and help the young receiver make the impact the Titans hoped he would be able to when they drafted him.

Jamison Crowder could be an even cheaper option in the reliable hands role or if they decide they want to stretch the field then Tyrell Williams could be an interestong piece for the Titans.

3) Ndamukong Suh (Defensive Tackle)

Could you imagine Suh and Jurrell Casey ripping apart the centre of opposing offensive lines? Suh may have look lethargic for large parts of last season but showed he still has a lot of talent in the post season. The Titans may not be big enough contenders if Suh has a couple of suitors but if the market was quiet this would be a great get for the Titans.

If a deal for Suh cannot get done then the Patriot connection for Malcolm Brown might be an interesting piece to strengthen that defensive line.

4) D.J. Fluker (Offensive Line)

I am not sure the Titans are going to address their line and they signed a swing guy back in a December. However, they showed a willingness to run the ball late last season but they were inconsistent. Fluker showed himself to be a run game mauler in Seattle and could be an interesting fit. Ultimately price will be the key but if they can find the right price for both side this could be an intriguing add for the Titans.

5) Darqueze Dennard (Corner)

The corner market is not great and the Titans may decide to prioritise elsewhere but a slot corner specialist alongside Malcolm Butler, Adoree Jackson and Logan Ryan could be interesting. The sticking point will be if Dennard what’s to go and prove he can be an outside corner. They may need to chuck cash at him and that could be a problem if they want to add other pieces.
