BACKGROUND

Treylon Burks is one of the most exciting and electrifying wide receivers in the 2022 NFL Draft class. An explosive and powerful receiver, he is firmly in the discussion to be one of the top receivers drafted.

Born in Warren, Arkansas, Treylon Burks attended Warren High School, where he was a four star prospect and ranked the top player in Arkansas by 247Sports

He totalled 151 receptions, 3403 yards and 43 touchdowns in his high school career before committing to Arkansas over schools like Michigan and LSU.

At Arkansas, Treylon Burks has proven to be a hugely productive versatile weapon. A total of 18 receiving touchdowns for 2399 yards, paired with a rushing touchdown and 222 yards, Burks has been used all over the field in the Razorback offence.

In 2021 Treylon Burks was on the Maxwell & Biletnikoff Award Watch Lists, before declaring for the 2022 NFL Draft in December.

Treylon Burks’s astonishing, energetic and dominant play style overwhelmed opponents and you seldom see players be able to do what Treylon Burks does.

An elusive athlete who thrives with the ball in hand, Burks stokes fear in opposition defences. Playing more on the outside in 2021, Treylon Burks has really shown he can do it all through his high school career.

Watch the video below which shows Treylon Burks’s lively, kinetic and formidable play style.

STRENGTHS

  • Athleticism
  • Size & Strength
  • Elusive
  • YAC

Treylon Burks is an imposing receiver. What he does makes him an absolute freak. Burks’s ability to combine size, power and explosiveness is extremely rare.

Treylon Burks has been used as a gadget type player. It is what makes him such a unique prospect. You don’t see players of Burks’s size who do what he can do in space. His ability to create separation and cause mismatches is some of the best in this class and he can win in multiple different ways.

Burks can pair this with sufficient speed. His athleticism is outstanding for his size, while his speed is sneaky quick.

With the ball in hand, he is elusive and is a yards after catch specialist. Treylon Burks’s strength means he is extremely strong and his play strength means he is difficult to bring down. You don’t want Burks running at you at full speed! He has fantastic contact balance and has tackle breaking ability.

It is this elusiveness at his huge size which makes Treylon Burks compelling. He is a huge specimen and prospects are rarely built this way. His big, filled out frame with his long arms mean he is tough and physical.

That arm length gives him a cosmic catch radius and the physicality and size means he is a steady blocker. Defenders aren’t getting away from him once he has his hands on them. Burks has sticky hands at the catch point and with hands size of 10 ¼ inches and needing specially made 5XL gloves you would expect it!

A versatile weapon, Burks has worked all over the field. Whether he is catching out of the backfield to become a runner, in motion, lining up in the slot or on the outside, Burks really has done it all.

WEAKNESSES

  • Route Tree
  • Route Running
  • Initial Acceleration

While we have stated that Treylon Burks’s speed is sufficient, he won’t be the quickest in this class. But at 225 lbs, you wouldn’t expect him to be. Burks is still deceitfully quick and uses his speed to better his craft. His initial burst off the line of scrimmage may not be overly explosive, but he shows great pace when up to speed.

The biggest knock on Burks is his route running. It isn’t a way that he creates separation, but that is alright. There are plenty of other ways that Burks successfully creates separation. His routes could be cleaner, crispier and snappier and he isn’t overly twitchy to create disconnect from defenders. Burks can also push off defenders at times which will be penalised at the next level

Trylon Burks’s route tree isn’t as developed as some may like it to be. That is partially down to the system he plays in and has definitely improved through the 2021 season. Arkansas hasn’t always used him in a way for Burks to refine his route tree, especially prior to the 2021 season.

In 2020, 82% of his snaps came from the slot. What Burks was asked to do was extremely simplistic and mainly consisted of basic routes like slants and screens. However, Burks has had more opportunities in 2021 to play as an outside receiver, which has been prosperous for him.

SUMMARY

Treylon Burks is one of the most dynamic and progressive receivers in this class. He plays the game like a modern receiver who is able to be lined up across the field.

He is more than capable of becoming a true X receiver, where he can display his outstanding vertical threat, using his excellent hand eye coordination to track the ball. But, still being used as a positionless player who can be lined up anywhere will mean he is a true impact player in the NFL.

Treylon Burks’s extraordinary combination of athleticism, strength, speed and size makes him a potent offensive weapon for any NFL team.

Likely to be compared to AJ Brown and Deebo Samuel, there should be plenty of teams clamouring to draft Treylon Burks come the 2022 NFL Draft.
