Orange is the colour in CFL Drafts

Orange is the colour for the CFL Drafts this year. That is because both the CFL Global Draft and the CFL National Draft had a player from Syracuse as the first pick.

There are already a few Syracuse Orange players around the CFL too. Like Jamal Custis, Patrick Davis, and Jamar McGloster.

Global first pick: Kingsley Jonathan Syracuse Orange

Kingsley Jonathan was the first of the Syracuse Orange players to head this year’s CFL Drafts. For the first time, as we noted, this year the CFL ran both drafts on the same day. Which meant Jonathan went first earlier in the day.

The 24-year-old was selected by the Montreal Alouettes. He had played 56 games for Syracuse at Defensive End. He had 101 tackles, 15 sacks and knocked down four passes, forcing three fumbles and recovering two.

Although Jonathan played high school football in North Carolina and Maryland, as well as for the Orange in the NCAA, he was able to be selected in the Global Draft due to being born in Nigeria.

He is currently signed to the Buffalo Bills, so the Als have him as a risk/reward pick should he head North.

CFL Draft first pick: Tyrell Richards Syracuse Orange

Tyrell Richards had been widely tipped to go first in the CFL Draft. Especially because of a great performance at the CFL combine. That had seen him taking part in drills as a linebacker, a defensive lineman and a defensive back. He was the first player in Combine history to do so.

The surprise element was that he didn’t go where expected. Most observers had anticipated the Edmonton Elks would take him with their first pick. Instead the Alouettes exchanged the 4th pick and the draft rights to offensive lineman Carter O’Donnell to grab Richards at the top of the board.

Not only is it double orange at the top of both draft boards. It is the Montreal Alouettes who made both picks then.

The Linebacker from Brompton, Ontario played 31 games for the Orange. Recording 54 tackles, 9.5 tackles for a loss and six sacks. He also received the Joe Szombathy Award as the team’s top special teams player in 2019.

So there we have it – the top of both 2022 CFL Darts went (Syracuse) Orange. Let’s see if that bright colour indicates success in the 3 Down game in the years to come! As ever it will be fun to watch and find out.
