Cleveland Browns Attempt First 2-0 in 29 years – can they get past themselves?
The 13th of September 1993 might sound like a quite random date. The number one song in the UK charts was Mr Vain by Culture Beat. John Major was the Prime Minister. And that year Al Pacino won the best actor Oscar for scent of a woman. It was also the day that Bill Belichick‘s Cleveland Browns went 2 and 0 for the very last time.
It seems unbelievable that it’s been that long since a team hasn’t won the first two games of a season. In fact last week was the first time the Browns won their opening game in 18 years.
Just a compound it slightly more for the poor Browns Jacoby Brissett is the 37th starting quarterback since Bernie Kozar led he team in 1993. Deshaun Watson will be the 38th.
Last sunday’s opener against the Panthers was supposed to be a revenge game for Baker Mayfield. However it was the Browns that won the day. Jacoby Brissett played reasonably while completing 18 of 34 attempts for 147 yards and a touchdown. The Browns really relied on the running game with Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt combining for nearly 200 yards.
The Cleveland Browns will be going up against a Jets team playing another reserve quarterback in Joe Flacco. Because Zack Wilson is also out injured. In his first game of the season Flacco threw 309 yards and one touchdown with one interception. I think I will see both teams rely on the running game in this one.
The Browns on Monday Night Football
Back in 1993 it was the heady heights of Monday night football for the Browns. Where they beat the Steve Young led 49ers. Bernie Kozar hit Michael Jackson for a 30 yard touchdown pass before halftime to give them a 20 to 13 lead. The only scoring in the second half was a field-goal meaning a 23 to 13 win for the Browns.
The Browns actually ended up going 3-0 in 1993. But an injury to the quarterback meant that the Browns finished a disappointing 7-9. I don’t know what this means for this seasons Jets but back in ’93 the 49ers went on the NFC championship!
