College Football Rankings Reaction – The Shift Before the Storm
Reading Time: 2 minutes.
The penultimate version of the 2018 College Football Playoff Rankings have been released. The iron grip of this years playoff incumbents has been broken. Notre Dame almost certainly secured their spot in the playoff and will praying for upsets aplenty this weekend. Alabama negotiated a testing Iron Bowl against Auburn and Clemson impressively handled South Carolina to both stay unbeaten and unchallenged as the number 1 and 2 rankings respectively. However Michigan crashed out of the Top 4 with their loss to Ohio State.

Hate Week Impact

With the top three teams staying put; chaos loomed for the team vying for that fourth spot. Georgia’s impressive resume capped off by a handling of rival Georgia Tech that more closely resembled an adult disciplining a small child than a college rivalry game; has the Bulldogs in the number 4 spot. They face Alabama this week in the SEC Championship game. One of the teams has to lose.
This opens the door to numbers five and six, Oklahoma and Ohio State. The historic Oklahoma offense powered them to a classic shootout victory over Will Grier’s West Virginia to book a spot in this weekends BIG12 Championship game. A win over rival Texas avenging the loss earlier in the season, will be a huge lift to the teams playoff hopes. In Columbus, Ohio this past weekend Ohio State continued their impressive run of victories in ‘The Game’ against Michigan furthering the torment of Michigan Head Coach Jim Harbaugh. The Buckeyes high powered offense looked modern and dangerous, whilst Michigan looked like a relic from a bygone era. The Buckeyes rise to number 6 leapfrogging the Wolverines who drop to 7.
Elsewhere, UCF is ranked 8 after winning against rivals USF despite losing star quarterback Mackenzie Milton to a horrific knee injury. Even a Conference Championship victory of Memphis this coming weekend probably won’t be enough to see them qualify for the playoff. Washington jumps up to 11 after defeating Washington State in a snowy Apple Cup matchup. The Cougars fall to 13. The Huskies face number 17 Utah on Friday night for the PAC-12 Championship.
