Stevens Transfer Request Add’s to Penn State’s QB Chaos
Reading Time: 2 minutes.

Whenever a program moves on from a record setting senior quarterback there is always some hint of chaos. It seems Penn State in the post Trace McSorely era will be no different. Fifth year senior Tommy Stevens, McSorely’s long term back-up at the quarterback position was primed to get his opportunity to start over the coming season. However a surgery in December of last year has left him only able to take skeleton reps in Spring Practice; leading head coach James Franklin to declare his starting quarterback position very much up for grabs.

Most of the snaps this spring have gone to sophomore quarterback Sean Clifford. Clifford has looked impressive, leading his Head Coach to announce a quarterback competition. It seems that Stevens doesn’t fancy his chances in the competition for the starting spot. He entered his name into the transfer portal on Wednesday, throwing the Penn State transition plan into chaos.

An Amicable Parting…

However, it should be noted that Stevens isn’t guaranteed to be transferring by entering the portal. It could be an exercise to see what offers are out there for the former 3-star dual threat quarterback. Interestingly Stevens would transfer with immediate eligibility, making him a tantalising prospect to programs with a need at the position.

“Tommy has so much invested in this year, and we know that this is his last shot. If he’s not Penn State’s quarterback, he’s going to be somebody’s quarterback. Everyone already knows, if he’s not playing at Penn State this year, he’s probably going to leave. I don’t think that’s much news to anybody. He wants to be a starter. … If it’s not Tommy, then I think Sean would do a great job, and we would wish Penn State the best of luck.”

The good news for Penn State fans is that things seem amicable between Stevens and the program. This means we shouldn’t rule out a return if he wins the starting job. On the other hand, Stevens’ father is clear. His son will be starting as a quarterback somewhere this September. Whether or not that place is Happy Valley remains to be seen.
