It has been a mixed start to training camp for the Tennessee Titans. They started the week in the worst way possible, losing star left tackle Taylor Lewan. Lewan announced in an emotional social media video that he had failed a drug test, a four game ban is sure to follow. However, hours later the Titans announced they had reached a contract extension with star young safety Kevin Byard.
Lewan A Huge Loss!
Left tackle Lewan is one of the premier players on offense for the Titans. He has been an elite blindside protector for Marcus Mariota and a driving force behind the Titans run game. The former two time all-American and Michigan man is one of the stellar characters in the NFL and the positive test was a bolt from the blue.
Losing your star left tackle for four in a crucial year for the evaluation of young quarterback Marcus Mariota is far from ideal prep for a team that needs to be competitive this season. Longer term, with an elite quarterback draft class on the horizon the Titans need to make a decision of whether to move on from Mariota this year. Making that evaluation without Lewan is going to be tough.
Titans Lock Up Talented Young Safety Byard
Kevin Byard has become one of the best young safeties in the NFL during his time with Tennessee. A third round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, the Middle Tennessee State product has shown elite ability in the safety position and has become a leader for the Titans on defense.
Getting business like this done early and quickly is the sign of great front office work. Players like Byard don’t come around in the third round all that often and locking him up is brilliant business for the Titans.
