What did we learn from week one?

What did we learn from week one?
Reading Time: 3 minutes.

Of course it’s way too early to make any predictions. But don’t we just love a bit of knee jerk reaction?  So who were the winners and losers in week One?

Winners……..

Hurts for Heisman

Well top of the winners pile must surely be the Sooners. My learned colleague and good college chap, @ojhogkinson told you already this week, Jalen Hurts single handedly tore the Houston Coug’s to shreds. Hurts for Heisman is real.

Bo knows

Eyebrows were raised when Gus Malzahn announced his QB1 as freshman Bo Nix. Well question Gus no more. Nix guided the Tigers to an exciting win over the much fancied Oregon Ducks. Just ask the College Chaps who unanimously had the Ducks to win this clash. What now for Oregon and Justin Herbert? Ps I was very impressed by the Auburn running game and in particular Sophomore, JaTarvious Whitlow who had a sensational game.

Fields of Dreams

Talking of freshman QB’s. Ohio State’s Justin Fields showed why he was rated the #1 QB coming out of high school. Building a huge lead against FAU, for some reason the Buckeyes took their foot off the pedal. Never in danger of losing the game, the question remains if they are that good and got lazy. Or got lucky and then FAU woke up. Jury’s out for me. Until next week.

Return of the Mack

I love that Mack is back at North Carolina. I love that Mack is dancin’. His team nearly caused him a heart attack by taking a knee with seconds to go. But the start to your season doesn’t come better than a win over your deadliest rival, who just happens got be a SEC scalp. While Muschamp’s job appears safe, this was not a career enhancing result for Will or his Gamecock’s.

And the Losers!

Woe is Willie!

Florida State will struggle again this season. Take a second to ponder this. Boise prepared for the game to be played elsewhere. Hurricane Dorian meant the game was moved to Tallahassee and a FSU home game. Boise travelled cross country. Boise started with a true freshman QB. FSU build a 14 point lead at the half. Boise then have 17 unanswered second half points to win. I have said it before. I’ll say it again. Willie Taggart wont be the Head Coach at FSU at the end of the year.

Pray for Clay

While the Trojans won, they lost QB JT Daniels to a season ending knee injury. What seemed like a long hard season, now seems like a longer, impossible season for USC. Tough luck for Clay Helton.

Lose Bowl

UCLA lost to Cincinnati. While this wasn’t the upset some might think, UCLA continue to struggle under Chip Kelly. This hire is looking more and more disastrous as the months toll on.

Trouble in Tennessee

And last but not least, the Vols. Tennessee’s woes are well known. But to lose to Georgia State, a team that won only 2 games last season. At Neyland Stadium?! Well words fail me. And that doesn’t happen so often.

So there you have it, the highs and lows of week one. Will week two be as exciting as this one. You betcha. College > NFL.
