Run CMC joins the triple crown club

Christian McCaffrey has joined an elite NFL club. In only his scond outing with the 49ers he became the first NFL player since 2005 to hit the triple crown in a game. That is, pass, catch and run for a touchdown.

In the game McCaffrey had 18 carries for 94 yards (with a touchdown), went 1 for 1 passing 34 yards (and a touchdown) and caught eight passes for 55 yards (and snared a touchdown). Pretty impressive stuff. And, it puts him in some impressive company too.

149 scrimmage yards and 2 touchdowns. 1 x 34 yard touchdown pass.

The Triple Crown Club

So who is in this illustrious triple crown club? Prior to McCaffrey’s stellar performance against the Rams only three other players had ever had a passing touchdown, receving touchdown, and running toucdown all in the same game – going all the way back to the 1970 AFL-NFL merger. Two of those players are now in the Hall of Fame.

First to do it was Walter Payton in 1979. In a 30-27 loss to the Vikings, he had 1 pass for 54 yards and a touchdown. As well as 23 carries for 111 yards and a touchdown and 2 catches for 26 yards and a touchdown.

137 scrimmage yards and 2 touchdowns. 1 x 54 yard touchdown pass.

Next up was the Patriots’ David Patten who achieved the feat in 2001. In a 38-17 win over the Colts he had a pass that covered 60 yards and resulted in a touchdown. Alongside which he had 1 run that covered 29 yards and a touchdown, as well as 4 recptions for 117 yards and another touchdown.

146 scrimmage yards and 2 touchdowns. 1 x 60 yard touchdown pass.

Finally, before this weekend, the last NFL player to hit the in game triple crown was LaDainian Tomlinson in 2005. In a 27-14 win in Oakland, Tomlinson had 1 pass go for 4 yards and a touchdown. He also had 31 carries for 140 yards and a touchdown, and 2 receptions for 39 yards and his final touchdown.

179 scrimmage yards and 2 touchdowns. 1 x 4 yard touchdown pass.

Of course, the in game triple crown isn’t the first time McCaffrey has made a little NFL history. In 2019 he joined another exclusive club, becoming only the third player to have a 1000/1000 season, with over 1000 yards rushing and 1000 yards receiving in a single season.

When you look at the list of players on the triple crown and 1000/1000 lists you see the kind of company McCaffrey is keeping is pretty impressive. Between them are three Hall of Fame memberships and an astonishing 8 Superbowl rings!

No doubt the 49ers will hope McCaffrey’s verstility will be the key to unlocking a championship too. But for now, he has made history once again.
