Athleticism – twitched-up athlete with explosiveness evident
Fluidity – can change direction with ease, as well as being able to turn hips quickly and follow opposing receivers
Mirroring – is able to follow a receiver along the route with little separation
Recovery speed – when does get deceived on routes, the recovery speed is exceptional
Speed – whilst not elite level, Phillips has plenty top end speed so as not to be an issue
Competitor – looks like he loves football. Is happy to come downhill at RBs, with plenty of effort into tackling and being disruptive at the catch point.
Ball skills
Positional versatility – whilst the majority of the time Phillips has lined up on the outside he has played his fair share of snaps in the slot
Zone coverage – players exceptionally well in zone schemes where he is able to use his reactions and closing speed effectively
WEAKNESSES
Size – is on the shorter side and also not the heaviest. This can show up when he can struggle to get off blocks from bigger-set wide receivers. Also his tackling, whilst full of effort and enthusiasm, can suffer when trying to take down ball carriers.
Can at times be a little over-aggressive and be caught out over committing
SUMMARY
Clark Phillips was fun to watch. His ultra-competitive play style and combative nature are really exciting and should stand him in good stead at the pros. Whilst his lack of height and size might put some teams off drafting early, Phillips is a damn good football player, a quality that should not be slept on (!), and will easily carve out a role for himself with whoever is lucky enough to snare him.
