Player Spotlight: Grant Delpit

Player Spotlight: Grant Delpit
Reading Time: 2 minutes.

Eric Reed, Tyrann Mathieu, Jamal Adams. A crop of NFL players that any school would be proud to produce. Grant Delpit is set to join that vaunted list of LSU safeties who became impact players at the next level. However, there is another college season prior to Delpit’s name being called on night one of the 2020 NFL Draft. Returning to Baton Rouge as the de facto leader of a defensive unit that will need to perform if LSU is to reach its tantalising potential. The stage is set for Delpit to have a superstar year on the back end and carry on the tradition that sees safeties from LSU drafted high.

Athleticism and Smarts

Delpit’s athleticism and smarts are a potent combo. He will be must watch at the combine, with a chance to run under 4.5 seconds in the 40. However, Delpit’s speed pales into comparison when you see his ability to contort his body to make plays on the ball. The LSU safety makes plays frequently, corralling five picks last season and nine passes defenced. Add in five sacks and a forced fumble and it is clear to see just how big an impact Delpit made on the LSU defense last year.

A Heat Seeking Missile

Another area of Delpit’s game that is so fun to watch is when he flies out of the backfield to make tackles. As can be seen in the video below, Delpit reacts so quickly and makes a huge play in the backfield. This happens multiple times a game and is reminiscent of the man he replaced in the LSU secondary Jamal Adams.

It’s Delpit’s Defense Now

Devin White, LSU’s star linebacker is gone. Drafted in the top ten of the NFL Draft. The secondary also lost its number one corner in Greedy Williams. Delpit isn’t alone back there, cornerback Kristian Fulton is also supremely talented. LSU also have one of the best defensive co-ordinators in the country in Dave Aranda. That trio will be looking to make a major impact on the SEC this season. Especially given the questions that surround the LSU offense.

Delpit should be considered a front runner for all the defensive awards in the college game this season. He plays in the premier conference in the country and is going to be the star on his unit. With splash plays all over his tape, it isn’t surprising that there is already quite a bit of hype around Delpit in 2019. He is going to be fun to watch this season, make sure you tune in to see it.
