Derrick Henry (35)

Henry taking the top spot should surprise no one. This is the second consecutive season he’s lead the league in rushing attempts, yards and touchdowns. He become only the 8th back ever to eclipse the 2000 yard mark this year. His total of 2027 yards is 470 more than his nearest rival, the Vikings Dalvin Cook, for the most rushing yards this season.

Henry is the first player to rush for over 2000 yards since Adrian Peterson in 2012 and the first to lead the league in rush yards in back to back years since LaDainian Tomlinson in 06-07.

There were questions prior to the 2020 season, when Henry signed a huge contract as to whether Henry could continue to flourish with such a large workload. Henry’s season no doubt helped quieten those critics with his increase in total touches(321 to 397), scrimmage yards (2141) and yards/rush (5.1 to 5.4).

Nick Chubb/ Alvin Kamara (2)

It’s hard to get a look in when one running back gets the most touches, yards and touchdowns as Henry did. But Chubb and Kamara deserve credit also. Chubb missed 4 games due to injury but still managed to get a very respectable 1067 yards, at 88.9 a game that was 3rd highest in the league. He got over the 100 yard mark in 6 games and only fumbled the ball once.

Kamara lead the league with receiving and rushing touchdowns with 21. His 932 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns this year are career highs. Image from katc.com

Kamara also missed time, playing in only 15 games, of which he started only 10. He’s the only back to get a vote who didn’t register over 1000 rushing yards, with 973 to his name for the Season. Kamara has made a living through the air, not just on the ground. He lead running backs this year with 756 receiving yards and the entire league with 21 receiving and rushing touchdowns.

Honourable Mentions?

With our top 3 getting 97.5% of the votes it’s hard to get a look in. But he’s our final nominee and some who maybe deserved a vote too.

Dalvin Cook (1)

With 1557 yards and 16 touchdowns on the ground, both second only to Derrick Henry, it’s pretty harsh on Cook being fourth on our list of nominees. His rushing yards and touchdowns are career highs as are his 1918 scrimmage yards and 5 yards/attempt on the ground. Not bad considering he missed two games through injury. Cook picked a great year to peak as he’s set to be a free agent come spring time.

Josh Jacobs/Jonathan Taylor

Josh Jacobs and Jonathan Taylor, both only 22, make this list as the only other running backs to get over 1000 yards and 10 touchdowns. Rookie Taylor was 3rd in the league with 1169 yards and 11 touchdowns for the Colts. Second year back Jacobs makes his first Pro Bowl for the Raiders following another 1000 yard season.
