Travis Kelce (37)

Kelce is, of course,a key piece for the Superbowl bound Kansas City Chiefs; Accounting for 29% of their yards through the air and 29% of their passing touchdowns.

His phenomenal season included 1416 receiving yards, the most ever by a tight end. Those 1416 receiving yards were second in the league of all players, behind Bills wide out Stefon Diggs. His nearest challenger at tight end was 220 yards behind. His 11 touchdowns, a career high, is tied 1st for tight ends with Robert Tonyan. Not bad when you consider he was rested for the last game of the regular season.

Kelce (R) has consistently been Mahomes (L) top target. Kelce had lead the Chiefs in targets in each of Mahomes 3 years as a starter. Image from

A Record Breaking Season

Not satisfied making holes in opponents defences, Kelce also made some serious holes in the record books. His 105 receptions, a career high, (2nd this term to Darren Waller) Makes Kelce the only ever tight end to have two 100 reception seasons, 2018 and 2020. Add to that: 2020 Was Kelce’s 5th consecutive season with over 1000 receiving yards. He’s the only tight end to ever do that too! His career high 94.4 yards per game, also a career high, takes his all time yards per game to 71. On track for highest career average for a tight end, ever.

Robert Tonyan (1)

There’s no shame in finishing second behind Travis Kelce. Especially for Robert Tonyan; A 6th round pick of the Lions in 2017, he was released a rookie before being signed to the Packers practice squad by late GM Ted Thompson. He made the team in 2018 but prior to 2020 had only 2 touchdowns and 177 yards through 27 games.

Tonyan had a break out season in 2020. His 11 touchdown receptions is tied first for tight ends. Tied with the aforementioned stud Travis Kelce. For the Packers he trailed only All Pro receiver Devante Adams with 11 touchdowns and 52 receptions (Adams had 18 and 115 respectively).

Darren Waller (1)

Waller continues to claim his spot as en elite tight end. After a break out year in 2019 (90 receptions, 1145 yards, 3 touchdowns), Waller excelled with 107 receptions (1st for Tight ends), 1196 yards (2nd) and 9 touchdowns (3rd).

A lynch-pin for the Raiders, Waller was the focal point in Vegas. He accounted for 28% of their air yards, 28% of their receptions and 32% of their receiving touchdowns.

The Raiders first season in Las Vegas didn’t go exactly to plan, finishing 8-8. Tight End Darren Waller continues to be a star for Vegas, with another impressive season.

Honorable Mentions?

Dawson Knox (1)

Knox snagged the final vote in the UK NFL Media All Pro Team. At 24 Knox had a good sophmore season. He Lead Bills’ tight ends with 288 yards and was tied with fellow ‘end Tyler Croft with 3 touchdowns. HE came into his own this post season, with 2 touchdowns and 65 yards in Buffalo’s 3 playoff games. Not outstanding numbers but Knox is a solid blocker and will look to continue improving come 2021.

T.J. Hockenson

Detroit’s second year tight end Hockenson earned a Pro Bowl spot with a nice 723 yard (3rd for tight ends), 6 touchdown (tied 9th) season. After receiver Marvin Jones, Hockenson was QB Matt Staffords second favorite target – Hockenson was 2nd on the team in targets, receptions, yards and touchdowns. With new coaching staff and potentially a new quarterback Hockenson should be a focal point for the Lions moving forward.
