  • Height: 6’5”
  • Weight 275 lbs
  • College: Iowa
  • Year: Sophomore
  • Position: Defensive End

STRENGTHS

  • Is incredibly strong.
  • Holds the point of attack really well and is always in control
  • Is extremely athletic and will test unbelievably well.
  • He is a high-upside player who you are drafting because of who they can become rather than who they have been
  • For a bigger frame but is surprisingly quicker than he looks.
  • His athleticism is off the charts and he can move in ways most can’t at his size and his frame.
  • He is a nasty, tough, physical player who plays will aggression and volatility.
  • Has a non-stop motor and never gives up on any play.
  • His breathtaking strengths mean he powers off blocks and can defeat double teams.
  • he converts this insane strength to speed through contact
  • Outstanding tackler
  • Is already a great run defender because of his strength but has the frame and tools to become a great pass rusher too.

WEAKNESSES

  • Still extremely, extremely raw.
  • Severe lack of experience having never started a game at Iowa. Was used as a rotational player
  • He has absolutely no pass-rush plan. He plays out of control but what he can do for a prospect so raw gives a lot of hope.
  • He will need an awful lot of developing and coaching in the NFL. But, many will fall in love with his physical make-up and special strength profile.
  • Isn’t overly flexible or bendy. Will likely be more of a true DE rather than an outside linebacker who you will ask to turn the edge at the next level.

SUMMARY

Lukas Van Ness is a riser through the NFL Draft process with many expecting the inexperienced, raw prospect to return to school. While he is extremely raw and you shouldn’t expect much from him in year 1, what he could become will have coaches and teams enamoured. His physicality, elite strength and what he is already with little experience, are very enticing. You can expect Van Ness to be in the early to mid-first round conversation and may even shoot up even more after he has completed athletic testing.
